The greatest advantage of a VTOL fixed-wing drone is operating from remote, unimproved terrain where traditional fixed-wing aircraft cannot fly. However, field independence requires disciplined pre-flight procedures to protect both the aircraft and nearby airspace.
Physical Airframe and Structural Audit
Before connecting electrical power, carry out a thorough physical inspection of every modular connection. Verify that the primary carbon wing spars are fully seated into the center fuselage receptacle and that wing retention latches are locked securely.
Gently inspect all four vertical motor booms for rotational play. Check that propeller locking nuts are torqued down and that no grit or dried grass from previous landings has entered the motor bearings.
Pitot Tube and Sensor Zeroing
Airspeed sensors rely on micro-differential pressure diaphragms that are extremely sensitive to ambient wind conditions during bootup:
- Cover the dynamic pitot tube with a silicone cover during power-on to prevent gust-induced calibration errors.
- Verify on your ground control station that indicated airspeed reads 0 m/s prior to uncover.
- Blow gently toward the pitot tube and confirm a responsive airspeed spike on your telemetry display.
- Confirm 3D GPS satellite lock with a minimum of 14 satellites and low HDOP before arming.
Control Surface Deflection Check
Switch the flight controller into Manual or Stabilize mode and physically move the airframe in pitch and roll. Confirm that the elevons counter the aircraft movement correctly: when the right wing drops, the right elevon must deflect downward to generate restoring lift.
Safe Arming and Clear Takeoff Zone
Always maintain a five-meter standoff perimeter when arming. Because the Stallion VTOL BNF features an active pusher motor alongside quad lift motors, verify that the forward throttle stick remains locked at zero and motor interlocks are armed only when all personnel are behind the aircraft.
